Press Release: Councillor Davison and City Council Pass 2021 Budget, Reach Consensus on Property Tax Cut, Police Funding, and Community Support

November 26, 2020

Calgary, AB – Jeff Davison, the City of Calgary Councillor for Ward 6 and City Council has passed the 2021 City Budget and have reached a consensus that cuts property taxes by 1.77 per cent while supporting Calgary police and addressing the concerns of marginalized Calgarians.

“Council has listened to and addressed the needs of all Calgarians. We’ve done our part to reduce taxes while maintaining support for the Calgary Police Service and the concerns of at-risk and marginalized Calgarians,” said Davison.

This year’s City budget is unique in that it contemplated a 1.77 percent reduction in property taxes. To do this, every City department, including the Calgary Police Service, had identified budgetary cuts to achieve this goal.

The Calgary Police Services identified a $10M reduction on its over $400M budget. However, to mitigate unknown future hiring concerns, Councillor Davison raised a motion arising that allows the Calgary Police Service access to further funding for hiring, should it be required. Council supported this direction.

City Council also considered alternative responses to mental health and addiction crises and established the Community Safety Investment Framework. Councillor Davison raised an amendment, which allocated funds from City reserves and did not support funding from the Calgary Police Service.

In doing so, Councillor Davison believes that this is in the spirit of working to support marginalized members of Calgary’s community while recognizing that current response practices may not be best in handling mental health and addictions crises. Council ultimately supported Councillor Davison’s amendment.

In addition, City Council unanimously passed Councillor Davison’s amendment, which called on the Province of Alberta to support a joint funding partnership to fund the Community Safety Investment Framework.
