Press Release: Councillor Davison Advocates for Vaccination Prioritization of the City of Calgary’s Critical Infrastructure Workers

February 16, 2021

Calgary, AB – Recognizing an expected increase to COVID-19 vaccine supply beginning the week of February 15, Councillor Davison has submitted a Notice of Motion asking Calgary City Council to advocate to the Government of Alberta that the City of Calgary’s critical infrastructure workers are prioritized in the phased vaccination rollout program.

Councillor Davison’s Notice of Motion states that the City’s critical infrastructure workers include select position within the Calgary Fire Department, Calgary Police Service, Calgary Transit, Water Resources & Services, Calgary 9-1-1 and Water & Recycling Services.

“Due to the nature of their work, the City of Calgary’s critical infrastructure workers are at a heightened risk to COVID-19 exposure,” says Davison. “As the Province considers Phase 2 of the vaccination rollout program, we can’t forget our critical infrastructure staff.”

The rollout of COVID-19 vaccines falls under the jurisdiction of the Government of Alberta, who has undergone a phased immunization program. Paramedics and emergency responders were identified in Phase 1A of the immunization program. The Government of Alberta is working to identify sequencing for Phase 2, with a decision to be made in the coming weeks.

Davison also notes that the Notice of Motion is in-line with recommendations from the Government of Canada, which states that critical infrastructure workers who face additional risks to maintain services for the functioning of society should be offered COVID-19 vaccines as supplies become available.

The Notice of Motion is set to be reviewed at the February 16, 2021 Priorities and Finance Committee Meeting.
